One of the youngest music forms - rap is divided into many types of styles and assimilates also other genders of popular music. We know fusions of hip hop and pop, soul, jazz, metal and rock. We know other fractions of rap such as gangsta rap (usually connected with mafia style of the West Coast of the U.S., showing not too ambitious lives of rich people); Christian hip hop (linked to Gospel and giving us good tips on how to play fair); pop rap (more related with commercialism, easy life, without special message for society - like most of the pop music).
Generally speaking, the real reason for why rap music was initiated was dissatisfaction of people from underclass. They wanted to be heard by others, especially by those, who were on top of capitalist and administrational machines. Over the years hip hop was the voice of people, whom nobody cares of. Time changed, but pure rap still stands by the side of people fighting for right and democracy. Nowadays this trend is called conscious rap, and is recognized as one of the most respectable stream in modern hip hop.
Conscious rap focuses on social matters, such as culture, economy, life of ordinary people struggling from day to day to survive. There is also place for religious themes and sometimes political problems, when it encompasses human being issues.
In spite of many criticisms of hip hop, there are many good musicians, inspiring songs and messages. One of the most popular rappers of that stream is Talib Kweli and Common, who talk about love, human progress, brotherhood and simply how to be. Sometimes it is worthwhile to take a look of their art.
