As it happens every year since 1901, a group of people is awarded with the Nobel Prize for their achievements in physics, chemistry, physiology or medicine, literature, economics and for peace. It is one of the most prestigious forms of recognition of significant and innovative achievements of scientists, as well as a tribute to poets, writers and people struggling for peace on Earth. There have already been revealed the names of the laureates who would receive the medal, diploma and cash award on 10 December. This day is the anniversary of the death of Alfred Nobel, Swedish chemist and business man, the founder of the Prizes.
It is said that while dictating his last will, Nobel stated:
– My servant Francis shall receive for his faithful service 10 000 francs …
Hearing that, the servant dropped the carafe that he was carrying and it broke.
– without 3 francs for the broken carafe… – continued Nobel.
The life of a scientist is not an easy one. It requires sacrifices, the achievements are not always appreciated. Although sometimes it might be hard to find a practical application of the complex theories or experiments, they surely are a contribution to the development of our civilization. This may be one of the reasons why many scientists, especially the Nobel Prize laureates, are popular, respected and considered to be a kind of idol or a celebrity.
One day Albert Einstein was travelling in train and went to the restaurant car. When he took the menu, he realized that he had forgotten his glasses. Therefore, he asked the waiter:
– Could you, please, read me the menu?
The surprised waiter read it, but after coming back to the kitchen he confessed to his friends:
– This Einstein is said to be such a wise man, but he can’t even read!
